Category Five Hurricane Punch

You haven’t really celebrated Mardi Gras unless you’ve had a hurricane. But step away from the bottled mix—that just won’t do. Instead, try our carefully tweaked Category Five Hurricane cocktail that’s as close to partying in New Orleans as you can get. First, we upped the fruit flavors for a much more sophisticated palate. At the same time, we morphed the overall drink into something softer and more balanced. Think of it like a well-stocked fruit salad. (Don’t worry, it still has a powerful kick.) Instead of relying on the esoteric passion fruit concentrate, which can be hard to find, we’ve swapped in passion fruit liqueur. We’re all about making things easier. Finally, we’ve turned the whole thing into a punch, rather than a shaken drink. It cuts down on prep time and gets the party rolling fast. When you’re mixing it up, don’t skip the ice melt. That extra liquid is necessary to balance the booze and turn this drink into the ultimate quaff.

6 servings

  1. Fill a 2-quart pitcher with ice cubes; add all the ingredients. Stir until chilled and about half of the ice has melted. Fill hurricane or Collins glasses with fresh ice; strain the cocktail into each glass. Plan on approximately 8 ounces of the punch per glass.
