Ingredients
1 c
finely chopped hazelnuts, walnuts, or pecans
8 slices cinnamon or cinnamon-raisin bread
½ c
chocolate-hazelnut spread, such as Nutella
1 md
granny-smith apple, thinly sliced
4 to 6 tablespoons salted butter, soft at room temperature
These simple sandwiches are made from familiar ingredients: crisp Granny Smith apples, rich chocolate hazelnut spread, and plush slices of cinnamon bread. It’s the assembly that makes them feel special. In true finger sandwich fashion, the crusts are trimmed away to reveal neat, straight sides, then coated with salted butter and crusted with crunchy chopped nuts. Finding soft, squishy bread is absolutely imperative—cinnamon swirl is preferred, though cinnamon raisin works great too.
Directions
- Heat the oven to 350°F. Spread the chopped nuts on a parchment-lined pan in an even layer and bake for 6 to 9 minutes or until golden and fragrant. Let cool completely and transfer to a wide, shallow bowl.
- Cut the crusts off each piece of bread then spread each slice with about 1 tablespoon of chocolate-hazelnut spread. On half the pieces of bread, arrange 4 to 6 apple slices, then sprinkle with about a teaspoon of chopped nuts. Top with the remaining Nutella-spread pieces of bread.
- Spread each exposed edge of the sandwiches generously with the soft butter, then press the buttered sides into the bowl of chopped nuts. The nuts should stick easily to the butter, but use your hands to help them adhere if necessary. Slice the sandwiches into triangles and serve immediately.
